The Black Guava, scientifically known as Psidium guajava 'Nigrum', is a unique and exotic fruit-bearing plant that stands out with its outstandingly dark-colored fruit. This variety of guava is well-known for its deep purple to almost black skin, which distinguishes it from traditional guava cultivars. This special variety of guava has been developed by the scientists of Bihar Agricultural University.

The Black Guava plant typically grows into a small to medium-sized evergreen tree, reaching an average height of 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters). It features an upright, branching habit with a dense crown of glossy, dark green leaves that provide an attractive backdrop for the vibrant fruits. The foliage is leathery and oblong, giving the tree an elegant appearance. The fruit will be fully ripe by August-end or September.

When in bloom, the Black Guava displays small white flowers with gentle petals, which emit a sugary fragrance that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies. These blossoms eventually give way to the enthralling fruit, the main highlight of the plant.

The Black Guava not only offers a visually spectacular addition to any garden or landscape but also provides the joy of harvesting its pleasant and distinguishing fruits. It is a fascinating plant that stands out among other guava varieties, enticing fruit enthusiasts and gardeners alike. According to scientists, by consuming this guava, old age can be prevented for a long time. The exclusive variety of black guava with red pulp inside is claimed to be rich in antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.

Properties of Black Guava

•    This variety is rich in antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins are found in this guava. It includes nearly 250 milligrams of vitamin C in 100 grams of fruit, vitamin-A and B, a high percentage of calcium and iron besides other multivitamins and minerals, some amount of protein, and other beneficial elements that have ‘antiaging’ effects on human beings.

•    This variety can fight diseases.

•    The pulp of this variety is red from the inside.

•    This variety is also beneficial for diseases like constipation and piles.

•    This variety is rich in calcium and iron, hence the problem of anemia in the body can be cured.

Dr Sandip Lal, president of the local chapter of IMA and HoD of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH), said the newly developed black guava has drawn the attention of the medical fraternity and needs further. exploration given its antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals and can help combat human diseases. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) should collaborate with the BAU in research and create awareness about the black guava as claimed, Dr Lal said.
